Skills required

You’ll need:

  • to understand technical plans
  • to be able to concentrate for long periods
  • maths and measuring skills
  • technical skills like knowing how to choose the right welding method for the job


What you’ll do

You’ll work with metals and alloys, and cut and join composite materials, such as plastics, using specialist welding methods. You’ll need an understanding of safe working practices.

 Your day-to-day tasks may include:

  • setting out the materials to be cut or joined
  • following engineering instructions and drawings
  • inspecting and testing cuts and joins, using precision measuring instruments
  • operating the semi-automatic spot-welding equipment used in high volume production lines

You’ll usually work in the construction and engineering, transport, aerospace and MOD sectors


Career path and progression

What you’ll do

You could work anywhere within the Underhill Group and support one or more functions throughout the business.

Your day-to-day tasks may include:

  • dealing with queries on the phone, by email and social media
  • greeting visitors at reception
  • typing letters and reports
  • updating computer records
  • printing and photocopying
  • ordering supplies
  • setting up meetings and taking notes during them
  • making travel arrangements for staff


Career path and progression

Depending on experience, we have various positions, including; admin assistant, supervisors or office managers. You could also move into other departments such as IT or accounting. With further training, you could specialise in an areas such as legal or compliance.
